Learning the Catholic Faith in General
There are many ways to learn about the Catholic Faith. God has revealed himself to us in Scripture and Tradition, so reading the Bible, experiencing the liturgy, and reading the writings of major saints in the Church's history are all very good ways to grow in your understanding of the Catholic Faith. Jesus has also established the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, which is continually guided by the Holy Spirit. It teaches the faith revealed in Scripture and Tradition so that followers of Christ may know what to believe. Thus, familiarizing oneself with the writings of popes and councils of the Church is another reliable way to learn the faith.
Pope St. John Paul II standardized the teachings of the whole Church into a book called The Catechism of the Catholic Church. As a compilation of the Church's teachings, it is saturated with Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium of the Church. He declared it to be "a sure norm for teaching the faith" (Fidei Depositum, 3). The Catechism of the Catholic Church can be found by clicking here.
Learning the Catholic Faith in the Diocese of Tyler
Specifically in the Diocese of Tyler, Bishop Joseph Strickland has founded the St. Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization. It is the teaching institute of the Diocese of Tyler. In May 2017, Bishop Strickland said that the Diocese of Tyler would become "a teaching diocese." He said,
"In order to answer the question, “How do we become a teaching diocese?” I am founding the Saint Philip Institute of Catechesis and Evangelization in the Diocese of Tyler. This Institute is charged with providing the parishes of the Diocese with the materials, expertise, and support to perform the mission of teaching as outlined in this Constitution. The Institute is founded for the service of the faithful of the Diocese.
The website of the St. Philip Institute is another readily accessible resource for learning the Catholic faith. There, the Institute produces and publishes both video and written content to ensure that the people of East Texas have the teachings of Christ at their fingertips. The content published by the St. Philip Institute distills the great teachings found in Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium. It takes the great books of christian doctrine off the shelves, and ensures that the people of East Texas may learn what God has revealed for the sake of their salvation.
The St. Philip Institute has also developed an adult faith formation textbook which is a great resource for learning the faith. This text, called The Way of Christ is an incredibly simple, yet profound summary of all the essential teachings of the Catholic Church. It also contains practical guides for living a Catholic life, such as:
- an examination of conscience
- how to go to confession
- how to pray the rosary and chaplet of divine mercy
- a list of common Catholic prayers and much more.
