Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I could not have received a warmer and more hospitable reception during all the events surrounding the Mass of Installation last week. I was humbled by the meticulous preparation for the events and the organized and joyful way in which they were carried out. Thank you. I am honored to have been chosen to be your bishop and look forward to learning how best to carry out this ministry in your midst.
As we embark on the Season of Lent this week, I am also asking what conversion of heart I am being called to embrace so as to best serve our Lord and to serve you in his name. Our life in Christ involves always an ongoing conversion and immersion into a mystery of such depths that we can never adequately understand who God is. The immensity of his power and love, the closeness with which he accompanies us in each moment of our lives, especially in times of suffering and darkness, and the great hope to which he calls us; are all beyond anything we can imagine or foresee.
The Season of Lent invites us to a renewal of our life in Christ and proposes three disciplines to help us open ourselves to the grace and mercy of Jesus: prayer, fasting, and works of mercy. Perhaps the even more basic discipline is that of trust. Trusting that the Lord is always at work in our lives in every circumstance, bringing about his will and accomplishing his purposes. The practices of prayer and fasting help us empty ourselves to receive something new from God, as God’s gift. The works of mercy, or almsgiving, help us to be instruments of his purpose in the lives of others, especially for those who are not able to fast because they do not possess enough to fast from.
Thank you again for your hospitality in receiving me as your bishop. I hold you in my prayers and ask that you pray for me as I begin this new ministry among you. May God bless us all with a deeper conversion of heart during this Lenten time, to receive a heart more like the Heart of Christ.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,
No podría haber recibido una recepción más cálida y hospitalaria durante todos los eventos que rodearon la Misa de Instalación la semana pasada. Me sentí honrado por la meticulosa preparación para los eventos y la forma organizada y alegre en que se llevaron a cabo. Gracias. Me siento honrado de haber sido elegido para ser su obispo y espero aprender la mejor manera de llevar a cabo este ministerio en medio de ustedes.
Al embarcarnos en el Tiempo de Cuaresma esta semana, también estoy preguntando qué conversión de corazón estoy siendo llamado a abrazar para servir mejor a nuestro Señor y servirles en su nombre. Nuestra vida en Cristo implica siempre una conversión continua y una inmersión en un misterio de tal profundidad que nunca podemos entender adecuadamente quién es Dios. La inmensidad de su poder y amor, la cercanía con la que nos acompaña en cada momento de nuestras vidas, especialmente en momentos de sufrimiento y oscuridad, y la gran esperanza a la que nos llama; están más allá de lo que podemos imaginar o prever.
El Tiempo de Cuaresma nos invita a una renovación de nuestra vida en Cristo y propone tres disciplinas para ayudarnos a abrirnos a la gracia y la misericordia de Jesús: oración, ayuno y obras de misericordia. Tal vez la disciplina aún más básica es la de la confianza. Confiando en que el Señor siempre obra en nuestras vidas en todas las circunstancias, cumpliendo su voluntad y cumpliendo sus propósitos. Las prácticas de oración y ayuno nos ayudan a vaciarnos para recibir algo nuevo de Dios, como regalo de Dios. Las obras de misericordia, o la limosna, nos ayudan a ser instrumentos de su propósito en la vida de los demás, especialmente para aquellos que no pueden ayunar porque no poseen lo suficiente para ayunar.
Gracias de nuevo por su hospitalidad al recibirme como su obispo. Los tengo en mis oraciones y les pido que oren por mí al comenzar este nuevo ministerio entre ustedes. Que Dios nos bendiga a todos con una conversión más profunda del corazón durante este tiempo de Cuaresma, para recibir un corazón más parecido al Corazón de Cristo.
