The University of Texas at Tyler Center for Ethics is hosting a panel discussion on Addressing the Epidemic of Domestic Teen Sex Trafficking in East Texas Wednesday, May 10, 5:30-7:30 p.m., in the UT Tyler Ornelas Activity Center Ballroom, 3402 Old Omen Rd. The panel will include experts in the field of human trafficking along with representatives from areas in law enforcement, legal and legislative, private and public education, and health care. A recent study by the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (IDVSA) at The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work estimates that there are more than 300,000 victims of human trafficking in Texas, including almost 79,000 minors and youth victims of sex trafficking and nearly 234,000 adult victims of labor trafficking. Human trafficking happens when one person is controlled through violence, deception or coercion in situations of commercial sex, forced labor, or domestic servitude. Although human trafficking is known to be prevalent in large states with big urban centers such as Texas, the scope of the crime has been difficult to measure. Existing data sets, which focus almost exclusively on identified victims, have shed light on only a fraction of the problem. Father Gavin Vaverek, promoter of Justice for the Diocese of Tyler, described sex trafficking as “an important problem that is a concern for the Church in her respect for the Sanctity of Life” and is encouraging parishes to send representatives to this discussion. For more information, please contact gduke@uttyler.edu or call 903-566-7023.
